Lexia LETRS Professional Learning Is the ‘Gold Standard’ for Science of Reading
Susan Wile has been an educator for 24 years, and she says Lexia® LETRS® Professional Learning is the best professional development she has ever used. “I have intentionally sought good professional development on how to teach kids to read, and this is really good stuff,” she said.
Wile is director of special education in the Tecumseh Local Schools in Ohio. In 2021, the state’s governor signed what is known as the dyslexia law, which required all districts to train teachers in the science of reading to help those with learning differences. Tecumseh leaders decided to use LETRS to prepare their educators because, as Wile says, “Lexia is the gold standard.”
While educators did feel a bit overwhelmed when they started LETRS, administrators say this was the right approach for both their teachers and students. Wile earned her master’s degree in special education in 2003, but said of LETRS, “It’s the first time I feel like I’ve actually been taught how to teach a student to read from the very beginning.”
Tecumseh Local Schools is a rural district with a high poverty rate and nearly one-quarter of the district’s 3,000 students are either special needs or learning English as their second language. Wile says LETRS training has engaged her educators because they see all of these young readers succeeding.
