What is LETRS?
Developed by Dr. Louisa Moats and leaders in the field of literacy, LETRS teaches the skills needed to master the foundation and fundamentals of reading and writing instruction—phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and written language.
LETRS professional learning for elementary educators is an investment in teachers’ literacy knowledge and professional practice. Teachers gain essential knowledge to master the fundamentals of literacy instruction required to transform student learning.
LETRS for Early Childhood Educators professional learning provides deep knowledge of literacy instruction for the youngest learners. The more children know about language and literacy before they begin kindergarten and first grade, the better equipped they are to succeed in literacy learning and beyond.
LETRS for Administrators equips instructional leaders to create systems and structures in their schools and districts to achieve high levels of academic performance and growth in literacy.

LETRS training is an easy-to-access, self-paced professional development program that provides teachers with the in-depth, science-based learning needed to become an expert literacy instructor. Through LETRS, teachers learn how the brain learns to read, and how to apply techniques and modify lessons from their curriculum and resources. Teachers equipped with LETRS knowledge gain confidence and power to successfully teach foundational literacy skills to their students. Students with science-based literacy instruction are better and happier readers and writers.

Developing life-long readers begins early and therefore the Michigan Department of Education has included improving early literacy in Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan, making it a priority. LETRS provides a system of training that delivers educators with the knowledge base to effectively implement any class-wide, supplemental, or intervention reading approach. LETRS ensures competent and confident teachers by strengthening their knowledge of the science of reading and the development of the reading brain. Michigan is proud to make this investment!
Kimberly St. Martin, Ph.D.

LETRS is an excellent investment in
further developing teachers’
language and literacy expertise to
understand why reading is complex,
the source of reading difficulties, and
how to successfully teach all
students, including those with
significant and persistent literacy-related needs. The information in
each LETRS unit allows teachers to
more easily discern effective versus
ineffective literacy practices. It
provides a depth of understanding
that empowers teachers to feel
confident in accelerating literacy
outcomes.

“Teachers are the most important factor in student success. Informed teachers can explain language to students, including sounds, spellings, and word meanings that might be confusing. They use lessons based on reading science and understand the process of learning to read and write. Research proves it. Science matters.”
