Lexia LETRS Success Surprises Educators With Decades of Experience
When Dr. Alisha Green taught her first class 28 years ago, educators focused on the whole language approach.
But times changed, and she and her team with the Chester County School District in Chester, South Carolina, needed to adapt as instruction methods shifted to the science of reading.
After state officials passed legislation requiring students to be held back if they were not reading at grade level by the third grade, Dr. Green said educators at her district buckled down to find a better way. That’s when they discovered Lexia® LETRS®.
Dr. Green said a lightbulb went off as she learned LETRS. “In hindsight, I can see now why a lot of my children were not as successful as they probably could have been,” she said. “And once you know better, you do better.”
Chester County is a Title I district. Dr. Green said the professional learning and support educators have received through LETRS helps bridge the achievement gap that often exists for students living in low-income areas. “In hindsight, we weren’t giving the children what they truly needed to close that gap,” she said.
