Lexia LETRS Bridges the Gap Between Assessments and Success
When school system leaders decide to shift the way they teach reading skills, it can be a big learning curve for both students and educators.
That’s where Frank Lukasik and educators at East Meadow Schools in Westbury, New York, found themselves when they adopted the science of reading.
“It’s been a 180 from the things that we’ve done in the past,” Lukasik said.
For years, district leaders had been diligent about doing assessments, but while they had a lot of data, the assessments alone didn’t move the needle in the classroom. Teachers needed a tool to help them actually use that information to improve reading outcomes.
Lexia® LETRS® covered all of the bases.
Lukasik said teachers now feel empowered. “Because of the work they have been doing in LETRS, they are able to better understand assessments and use that information to plan instruction for the kids,” he said. Lukasik added both educators and building leaders dove into the data and found a lot of students now above grade level.
While literacy is the team’s chief goal, the tremendous growth in educator confidence has proven to be the cherry on top.
