Lexia Core5 Reading Gives Each Reader Individualized Support
Monticello Central School District is in a very rural area north of New York City. Principal Jennifer Gorr said it is one of the poorest areas in the state, but the district is now seeing an influx of affluent families moving in to escape city life.
“Our students have a wide range of backgrounds that contribute to our overall culture,” Gorr said.
Educators in Gorr’s district noticed students’ reading skills started off strong but dropped sharply by fourth grade, with many carrying the deficiencies into middle and high school. “So, teachers are compounded in the amount of work that they have to do to meet the needs of each individual student,” which, Gorr pointed out, is quite difficult.
Educators in the district instituted Lexia® Core5® Reading to combat the learning loss by laying a strong foundation, but it is also helping older students who didn’t have the right support at the start.
Gorr said Core5’s individualized instruction is as unique as the district’s population. “It speaks to the students’ individual levels and creates a program that supports their needs,” she said. She also said Core5 helps educators reach many of their students dealing with trauma and an inability to self-regulate in ways a worksheet and a lecture cannot.
