Dedicated Facilitators Share the Benefits of Lexia
As the early childhood coordinator for Moore Public Schools, Pam Plumley’s role is to give curriculum guidance to the Oklahoma district’s educators. She and six other coordinators wanted to find a better way to support teachers in 25 elementary schools.
The coordinators decided a focus on the science of reading would be beneficial since many of their teachers had never been exposed to the concepts behind how children actually learn to read. Plumley said the goal was to give educators the background and foundation they need to understand where their students are coming from.
Together, the coordinators dove into courses in the Lexia® LETRS® Suite, mainly Lexia® LETRS® for Early Childhood Educators. “We learned so much, and we just gained more information and more knowledge on how to share it with our teachers,” Plumley said.
Plumley said she spends a lot of time helping teachers use their new knowledge to screen and assess students, to understand what the data is teaching them, and how to decide what their next steps should be.
“They have a deeper understanding that what they’re teaching is for a reason,” Plumley said. “And it’s going to make a difference in the students.”
LETRS teaches the foundational skills educators need to master in reading and writing instruction, and although it requires some extra work, it is absolutely worth taking the journey, Plumley said.
