One Michigan County’s Journey To Implement the Science of Reading
Low reading scores drove leaders at Saginaw Intermediate School District (ISD) to rethink literacy support from the top down. Thanks to Michigan's Public Act 122, educators across the state now have access to Lexia® LETRS®, a comprehensive professional learning program rooted in the science of reading. Leaders at Saginaw ISD seized this opportunity to equip educators at every level, from superintendents to classroom teachers, with a shared foundation in Structured Literacy.
Their approach demonstrates the power of coordinated leadership. Instructional coaches received targeted support to better assist teachers. Administrators hosted monthly meetings to stay engaged and informed. District leaders worked in partnership with curriculum directors to prioritize sustained implementation. According to those leading the effort, successful adoption hinges on listening to the science and building systemwide understanding.
Educators across Michigan are seeing results. Survey data shows that 94% of LETRS-trained educators feel confident delivering instruction aligned to the science of reading, and 94% can identify and address students’ specific literacy needs.
Even initially hesitant leaders are coming on board. As support grows, more district leaders in the region are planning to integrate Lexia® Core5® Reading, Lexia® PowerUp Literacy®, and Lexia English Language Development™ alongside LETRS.
For district teams looking to strengthen literacy instruction across schools, this case offers practical insights and a model for full-system impact driven by expert-backed training.
