Saginaw Intermediate School District, Michigan
Embedding the Science of Reading on a Countywide Scale
A trio of Saginaw Intermediate School District (ISD) leaders is actively finding ways to work “alongside” more than 40 districts as they put educators at the center of a countywide shift toward science of reading-based instruction.
Partnering with district leaders at every level from superintendents to classroom educators, they’re leveraging every resource at their disposal to influence educators to take an evidence-based approach to literacy education.
At the heart of this effort is Lexia® LETRS® Professional Learning, a comprehensive professional learning course of study for elementary educators and administrators. It teaches the how, what, and why of literacy acquisition to improve instructional practice and achieve long-term systemic change in literacy education.
Since LETRS is offered freely by the Michigan Department of Education for most educators and administrators, the Saginaw ISD team has been proactive about driving participation among district leaders at all levels, taking advantage of this unique opportunity.
Their approach has yielded positive results, as educators report stronger confidence and district leaders are aligning around a common understanding of the science of reading—without sacrificing local control.
The keys to their success? Building shared understanding, honoring local context, and investing in educators. This collaborative, proactive, and multitiered approach has garnered support at every level, and continues to yield positive outcomes as the science of reading takes hold.
