Lexia English Language Development Canada Annual Report

Lexia® English Language Development™ continues to support meaningful language growth for Emergent Bilingual students across Canada. During the 2025-2026 school year, 1,200 students and 1,900 educators in 230 schools used Lexia English to strengthen the speaking, listening, and grammar skills students need to participate confidently in academic learning.

Students who used the program as recommended completed an average of 235 units and 36 Presentations of Knowledge, which provide opportunities to demonstrate what they have learned. Across all grades, 2 in 5 students moved up a proficiency band in their respective language standard within the program.

Lexia English places student voice at the center of language development. Fifty-nine percent of students' time using the program was spent in conversations, resulting in 58,000 academic conversations and 4,400 hours of total conversation during the school year. This sustained oral language practice helps students build fluency, strengthen communication skills, and gain confidence using academic English.

The program aligns with multiple English language proficiency standards and is supported by research showing positive effects on language development. Effect sizes in peer-reviewed studies range from 0.10 to 0.42, and Emergent Bilingual students using Lexia English have outperformed nonusers on assessments of language skills.

By providing student-driven language practice and support for educators, Lexia English helps schools address a range of proficiency levels and learning needs. Together, these findings demonstrate how targeted language instruction can strengthen oral communication, expand academic participation, and help Emergent Bilingual students build the skills they need to thrive in Canadian classrooms.
