Data-Driven Leadership Drives Literacy Growth: Insights from Niles Middle School
Niles Middle School in Ohio, a traditional public school serving approximately 500 students, was facing challenges common to many grades 6–8 schools following pandemic‑related literacy loss. Their previous approach relied on time‑intensive assessments that delivered limited insight—making it difficult for educators and leaders to clearly understand progress or adjust instruction effectively.
Assistant Principal Leah Marsh was familiar with Lexia® from her previous role as a high school teacher and saw an opportunity to move toward a more evidence‑based approach. At Niles, educators and leaders quickly recognized the value of having consistent, real‑time data to better understand student performance and support more informed instructional decisions across classrooms.
With access to actionable data and flexible implementation models, teachers were able to integrate literacy instruction in ways that aligned with instructional goals—while school leaders maintained visibility into usage and progress. In just one school year using Lexia® PowerUp Literacy®, 85% of Niles students meeting usage moved up at least two zones.
Equally important, Marsh and her leadership team valued the clarity the data provided—from monitoring progress to identifying trends and supporting instructional conversations.
