Top Education Official Praises Benefits of Lexia
The former U.S. assistant secretary of education for elementary and secondary education said if educators have not updated the way they teach to reflect scientific advancements, now is the time. That includes how educators teach students to read.
“It’s time to retool,” Frank Brogan said. “It’s time to look at how we do old things in new ways, just like the rest of the world is doing.”
Brogan rose from the education commissioner of Florida to the Department of Education. He retired from the DOE in 2021, and now he’s spreading the word about the importance of the science of reading. “It’s going to be quite a process, but I don’t think there’s a better time,” he said.
Brogan said the secret to revamping teaching methods and closing large learning gaps is to first train educators, and a key component of that should be innovative tools like Lexia® LETRS® Professional Learning, Lexia® Core5® Reading, and Lexia Aspire® Professional Learning.
“No one wants schools to fly blind into the world of change,” Brogan said. He believes Lexia’s research-backed, science-based programs can use data to demonstrate how the science of reading can help educators go above and beyond for their students. He said he believes doing this will increase opportunities for students across the country.
