Slow and Steady Wins the Race With Lexia LETRS
There are few things in this world that are truly one size fits all, but Lindsay DeHartchuck, director of Early and Elementary Literacy at KIPP Public Schools in San Antonio, said the science of reading is one of those unicorns.
There is a lot of talk in the education community about being innovative and independent, DeHartchuck said. However, she insists when it comes to teaching students to read, all of the educators in her district must use Lexia® LETRS® Professional Learning.
“Your implementation plan in one school or one district can look different, but at the end of the day, this is what we know works for the most kids in the most efficient way,” she said.
Educators at KIPP Public Schools built their program around strong professional learning. They have a multiyear approach and don’t expect teachers to solve the reading crisis over night.
Still, DeHartchuck said LETRS has helped them knock out significant reading gaps in a single school year. “This is a long game,” she said. “It’s going to take time to do this right, but we are seeing some really positive outcomes.”
