Lexia Science of Reading Leadership Summit 2025
Evidence is the foundation on which science of reading-based literacy instruction is built. A new video from Lexia® describes this approach to literacy teaching and intervention and provides tips for assisting educators in their journey to implementing the science of reading in their everyday practices.
In the video, host Amber Burks-Cole, Lexia literacy solutions manager, joins Carey Sweet, Lexia’s national education advisor, to discuss what they have heard from educators during the Lexia Science of Reading Leadership Summit—and they provide an overview of how this approach to literacy instruction shapes skilled and confident readers.
What they heard most frequently, they say, is “evidence” is the single best word that describes the science of reading. That evidence is decades of high-quality, multidisciplinary research that’s been rigorously tested and consistently validated.
In describing what the science of reading is—and what it’s not—Sweet explains this approach to reading instruction goes beyond intuition, tradition, and popularity to focus on:
Well-designed empirical studies that examine how children learn to read
Tools to ensure every child, regardless of preparedness, has the opportunity to become a skilled and confident reader
Support that equips educators to teach with clarity, intention, and assurance they’re using research-backed methods
Despite its proven effectiveness, science of reading-based instruction often isn’t an approach that is implemented in a linear journey. In fact, Sweet notes, the process of implementing this type of literacy instruction and intervention often requires:
Shifting beliefs
Opening minds
Creating a culture that embraces both learning and unlearning
