Lexia PowerUp Literacy Meets Middle School Readers With Age-Appropriate Support
What do you do when you have struggling pre-teen readers? Offering them resources built for elementary students can bore them and even cause embarrassment that they are not measuring up.
Kasey Webb, associate superintendent for the Office of Catholic Schools with the Archdiocese of New Orleans, said educators in her archdiocese had many students in this situation. She also said most universities are not preparing educators to teach reading in the most effective and efficient way which makes it even harder to help these late bloomers.
“So now, we are all trying to catch up on the science of reading. That’s where Lexia® really comes into play,” Webb said.
Educators at schools within the archdiocese start students with Lexia® Core5® Reading, but where Webb really sees incredible benefit is with middle school students using Lexia® PowerUp Literacy®. “It helps them really fill in some of those foundational reading skills that they may have missed, but it does it in an age-appropriate and engaging way,” she said.
The archdiocese adopted Core5 and PowerUp six years ago. Educators praise PowerUp because it is beneficial for all students, not just those lagging behind.
PowerUp also gets students excited because they can make their own goals and keep track of their progress. “So that’s huge,” Webb said. “Because if they’re not engaged, they’re not invested.”
