Lexia LETRS Helps Educators Transition to More Phonics-Based Instruction
Literacy is Jen Lasher’s passion. She has been teaching students to read for 24 years, but says there always are young readers who need extra help.
Even with years of training and experience, educators in the East Meadow School District in Westbury, New York, found it difficult to identify students who were struggling and decide how to help them succeed.
“We noticed that most of our children had a huge gap in learning,” Lasher said. To close those gaps, district leaders recently shifted from a balanced literacy approach to a Structured Literacy program that focuses on phonics skills.
Educators needed support during this dramatic change, so they instituted Lexia® LETRS®. LETRS is a research-based program that provides educators with a solid understanding of the science of reading. It also supports them with assessments, resources, and tools that help young readers reach their full potential. Educators learn best practices for developmentally appropriate, evidence-based routines and instruction impacting the delivery of playful, purposeful instruction essential for the development of early literacy skills.
“Through my LETRS training, I’m becoming more and more confident in what I’m doing as an educator,” Lasher said. “And I’m seeing so much success in all of my learners this year.”
