Lexia LETRS Gives High School Instructors Tools to Help Struggling Students
“When you get to high school and kids can’t read, there’s not a lot of hope.”
Sydney Azzi of the National Heritage Academies says she has seen this all too often. To make matters worse, teachers at the high school level don’t usually have the in-depth knowledge to help such students who themselves have lost faith in their ability to learn.
With the help of Lexia® LETRS®, Azzi says her team has become proficient in the science of reading and now has materials that are geared specifically toward these older learners. This not only helps their learning journey, but their psychological path as well.
“Part of it has to be how do I get kids believing that the effort they put in will actually create an output because for the past nine years it hasn’t,” Azzi says. “So, what is going to be the change at this point in time that it will make a difference and that they believe it will make a difference?”
Now, reading specialists in all of National Heritage Academies’ charter schools have participated in LETRS, and they are seeing tremendous growth in their students.
