Lexia Brings Science of Reading to Life for Both Students and Teachers
“The science of reading has been very eye-opening for me!”
Maryanne Hilton came to teaching later in life. After leaving the corporate world, she started teaching second grade and was shocked to discover how many students struggled to read. This led her to get her master’s degree, and she is now the academic coach for Imagine School at Town Center in Palm Coast, Florida. “It was like this surreal, full-circle life moment for me that I can now teach teachers so they can be the best educators in the classroom for their kids,” she said.
Hilton said she finds it frustrating that there are still teacher-prep programs that do not prepare teachers to really teach students how to read, so she leans on Lexia’s research-based programs to bring the science of reading to classrooms from kindergarten to eighth grade.
The charter school’s population is very diverse, and the classes are large, which makes working one-on-one difficult. Hilton said one of the things she loves about Lexia® is how it can be tailored to give each student exactly what they need. “With Lexia we are able to see students grow at their own pace,” she said.
