Literacy Needs Assessment for Michigan: Where is Your School on the Science of Reading Journey?
Michigan educators’ commitment to raising literacy achievement has led to significant investments in research-based instruction, reflected in Public Act 144 of 2022 and the Michigan LETRS Science of Reading Professional Learning Course.
These initiatives offer educators free, sustained professional development, ensuring teachers and administrators gain the expertise needed to implement the science of reading in their classrooms. Senate bills 567 and 568 further strengthen literacy intervention by helping identify students with dyslexia and ensuring timely, targeted support.
For more than four decades, Lexia® has partnered with districts to boost student reading proficiency through programs like Lexia® LETRS® Professional Learning (pre-K–5), which equips teachers with evidence-based practices. By deepening educators’ understanding of how students learn to read, LETRS professional learning supports teachers in using programs such as Lexia® Core5® Reading even more effectively. This integrated approach empowers instructors to identify reading difficulties, adjust instruction accordingly, and measure progress using clear, data-driven benchmarks.
Importantly, this initiative isn’t just about instructional techniques; it’s also about creating a supportive culture of literacy. Administrators are encouraged to lead with empathy, inviting teacher input and championing practices that foster equitable outcomes for every learner. From structured professional learning to at-home reading resources, Michigan school leaders are building a comprehensive system that helps educators thrive—and students flourish. As educators apply their newly strengthened expertise in the science of reading, entire communities stand to benefit from better reading outcomes, deeper engagement, and a lifelong love of learning.
