District Combines LETRS and Core5 to Support Ultimate Literacy Goal
For years, many students have struggled to learn to read despite the best efforts of educators. Many teachers were not provided teacher education based in the science of reading or an understanding of how the human brain learns to process written language. Now, as state and district leaders across the country look for evidence-based solutions for their students, the importance of tools aligned with the science of reading cannot be understated.
In Oklahoma’s Putnam City School District, Elementary ELA Curriculum Coordinator Amber Elder and her team implemented the gold-standard professional learning Lexia® LETRS® alongside the curricular-support tool Lexia® Core5® Reading to help teachers and students achieve literacy success.
“We were able to look at our curriculum and provide our teachers with a solid curriculum, based on the science of reading and Structured Literacy, so they have tools in their hands now. Our teachers are now able to take that curriculum and make instructional decisions based on what their students need,” Elder said during a recent interview.
LETRS provides teachers with a depth of knowledge in literacy acquisition that most teacher-preparation programs don’t provide. Putnam City School District teachers who went through LETRS gained confidence in their instructional abilities and were better able to meet the needs of all their students. Layering on Core5 gave teachers the in-classroom support and tools necessary to ensure every child received the instruction to be successful.
