Transforming Literacy Education in North Carolina
Catherine Truitt, former North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction, inherited a district struggling to achieve literacy scores, reporting more than 20,000 students reading below grade level. Despite executing an improvement plan alongside pandemic recovery, Truitt cited bipartisan support and partnerships as the key drivers to success.
At the start of the 2024–2025 school year, all teachers were trained in Lexia® LETRS® Professional Development. Truitt wrote, “Our latest K–3 data show that North Carolina students taught by educators trained in the science of reading consistently outperform national averages across all grade levels and student subgroups.”
