Lexia LETRS Helps Virginia Teachers Adopt Science of Reading
Change is hard.
“I was a super balanced literacy advocate,” says Jean Weich, an education specialist in the Fairfax County Public Schools. “Then, I took LETRS. I feel like that was the impetus for me just leaving everything else behind and moving forward.”
From there, Weich helped teachers throughout the district learn a new way to teach, but the transition to the science of reading was not easy. In fact, it was quite upsetting for many when they realized all of their advanced degrees did not prepare them for what was really effective in the classroom.
“I was just like, how did I not learn this? I have a master’s degree in reading, my minor in undergrad was reading, but I’d never learned any of this. It just changed the way that I thought about teaching literacy,” Weich says.
Fairfax County educators were already using Lexia® Core5® Reading, a proven program that accelerates the development of literacy skills for pre-K-5 students, but the teachers needed help right alongside the students. Lexia® LETRS® Professional Learning helped them master all of the fundamentals needed to transition to the science of reading.
