Lexia Creates ESL Education for Schools Without Traditional Resources
Great Hearts Texas Charter Schools can be found all across the state. During the last few years, educators at the schools have started seeing a steady increase in students from India, other Asian countries, and Mexico, many of whom needed help learning English. Unfortunately, the charter school system doesn’t have enough certified English as a Second Language teachers to get these students proficient in their new language.
They needed help, so they turned to Lexia® for the solution.
“For us, the Lexia English [Language Development™] program is just a great place to start,” says Kate Adelmann, the North Texas regional coordinator for English language services for the charter school group. “With Lexia, we are able to have our English learners start with the program, get a placement assessment, so we understand where they are in their English development. Then, through their work on Lexia English, we're able to track how their English proficiency is coming. It’s just a wonderful tool!”
Adelmann says the fact that students can learn even if the teacher cannot sit with them one-on-one is incredibly valuable, and the data coming from Lexia English shows how students are progressing districtwide.
“Lexia knows what they’re doing, and they are great to have in your corner,” Adelmann says.
