Lexia Core5 Reading Supports Louisiana Students, Teachers
Elementary educators in Bossier Parish, Louisiana, needed a way to help their youngest students get excited about reading. First grade teacher Tyra Harrell said her goal is to always be the voice for students who might be lacking support or access to resources at home.
Harrell said Lexia® Core5® Reading made a huge difference for students at the Title 1 school. “For the last couple of years, I’ve been going from first to second grade,” she said. “So, I’ve been able to see how the students have grown.”
But the change didn’t happen overnight. First, educators had to acknowledge students are not the same as they were 20 years ago, and that meant their methods for instruction needed to evolve.
She found Core5 helped her understand exactly what each student struggled with and then put all of the tools she needed to fix issues right at her fingertips. This also helped parents get involved. “I can send lessons home with them, and it gives them exactly what to say and examples,” she said.
The learning curve for both students and teachers was steep when starting Lexia®, but she said the effort was worth it. “We want them [students] to be successful, so we have to be flexible and willing to learn new things,” she added. Her best advice to other educators is to trust the process.
