PowerUp for Virginia's Secondary Students

The Virginia Literacy Act mandates statewide use of high-quality instructional materials aligned with science-based reading research to improve literacy outcomes. Lexia® supports this initiative through its evidence-based program Lexia® PowerUp Literacy®. 

This flyer provides an overview of PowerUp. It’s the only program that meets Virginia Department of Education expectations for grades 6–8 supplemental instruction in Word Analysis, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. PowerUp also is approved for literacy intervention in these grades.

PowerUp is research-proven to accelerate literacy gains for students who are at risk of not meeting College- and Career-Ready Standards. Developed for grades 6–12, this science of reading-based program helps students achieve multiple years of literacy growth in a single academic year by blending:

• Technology-based, student-driven instruction

• Offline educator-delivered lessons

• Independent skill-based activities

PowerUp identifies skill gaps and provides personalized, systematic support that emphasizes Word Study, Grammar, and Comprehension. Its design makes it ideal for addressing the needs of a wide range of students, from those who are several grade levels behind to those who are nearly proficient readers. Additionally, its contents respect the maturity of adolescent learners, with texts and motivational elements tailored to this age group.
