Building a Stronger Literacy System Through Professional Learning
Faced with the challenge of raising literacy outcomes across 54 campuses with limited time and resources, educators at the Beaverton School District turned to Lexia® LETRS® Professional Learning as the foundation for sustainable change. Serving more than 37,000 students, 60% from diverse backgrounds and nearly 40% qualifying for free or reduced lunch, district leaders needed a scalable solution grounded in the science of reading. LETRS provided the catalyst.
Educators responded with enthusiasm: 96% of teachers who completed LETRS sessions said they could apply what they learned, and later surveys showed 100% felt confident identifying and targeting students’ literacy needs. This professional learning laid the groundwork for more effective use of Lexia® Core5® Reading and Lexia® PowerUp Literacy®, leading to substantial student gains. The percentage of students working on or above grade level in Core5 nearly doubled in one year, while the number of PowerUp students mastering advanced Word Study skills nearly tripled.
District leaders say LETRS helped them meet legislative requirements, build educator confidence, and clarify which tools best serve students. Four full cohorts of educators have already completed LETRS, with interest only growing. By aligning professional learning with proven instructional tools, Beaverton is transforming literacy instruction-one confident educator and engaged student at a time.
