Systematic Literacy Change in 2 Years
Implementing a Successful Science of Reading Remodel Districtwide
With more than 20,000 students and a multilingual population, literacy leaders in a large urban district in Washington were looking for a comprehensive solution to support diverse student needs. As they built out their visionary multiyear literacy plan, they found that solution in Lexia®.
In 2022, district leaders launched a multiyear transformation to ground the literacy curriculum in the science of reading with a mission-driven trio at the helm. They launched a cohort of educators being trained using Lexia® LETRS® Professional Learning (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling)—and quickly gained momentum. The most recent cohort includes more than 100 teachers learning evidence-based methods for improving reading instruction for elementary and secondary students.
Following the momentum and early results of LETRS training, they adopted Lexia® Core5® Reading for K–5 student use and Lexia® PowerUp Literacy® for secondary student use. These programs aligned with the teacher training already in progress—and provided students with a personalized, adaptive learning experience to help fill crucial literacy gaps.
In just two years, educators are already seeing promising results: 92% of students using Core5 advanced at least one grade level, and 74% of PowerUp students ended the year with improved skills. With a broader cohort of educators, coaches, literacy development teachers, and interventionists being trained in LETRS, they now have a cohort that can bring the science of reading to the classroom holistically.
They expect this will accelerate the exceptional results they’re already experiencing. “Every single teacher wants to help their students read,” said Executive Director Erika Rudnicki. “Having the tools, like Lexia, to help them succeed is the motivating factor.”
