Michigan Literacy Needs Assessment: Where is Your School on the Science of Reading Journey?
Michigan leaders’ commitment to improving literacy outcomes is gaining momentum through the Public Act 144 of 2022 and recent legislation supporting science of reading instruction and dyslexia-informed intervention. The Michigan LETRS Science of Reading Professional Learning Course offers free, sustained training for educators across the state—and more than 10,000 Michigan educators have already participated in Lexia® LETRS® Professional Learning, with 97% reporting improved use of research-based practices in their classrooms.
This literacy needs assessment is designed to help school leaders reflect on their school’s current position on the science of reading journey and determine the right next steps. The checklist includes guiding questions around staff training, classroom implementation, and strategic literacy goals. It also encourages administrators to take a compassionate, collaborative approach—inviting input, supporting growth, and fostering a culture of literacy across the school.
Administrators can use this resource to evaluate what investments may be needed to support both educators and students—whether that includes advancing LETRS completion, aligning instructional practices to the science of reading, or introducing tools like Lexia® Core5® Reading to help teachers deliver differentiated, evidence-based instruction.
With the right professional learning and classroom supports, every educator can create lasting change and empower all students to become confident, capable readers.
