Quick Start

What is Lexia PowerUp Literacy?

Your adolescent reader is using Lexia® PowerUp Literacy®, a computer-based program that adapts instruction to their specific needs. The activities in PowerUp support and build on your school’s English Language Arts classroom curriculum, focusing on developing skills in three important areas: Word Study, Grammar, and Comprehension.

Here’s how PowerUp works:

  • The first PowerUp session begins with a placement activity that determines the starting point based on learners’ needs. They can then work on online activities at the appropriate level throughout the week.
  • Each week, learners work toward a weekly online goal of 75-135 minutes split among the three areas (Word Study, Grammar, and Comprehension). This weekly goal will decrease over time as your reader makes progress.
  • Adolescent readers are rewarded for consistent, strong work by earning streaks. Ask your reader about their highest streak and what they’ve learned.
  • At school, teachers provide help when needed based on student progress and performance. Students complete paper-and-pencil activities to practice and extend skills.
  • Watch the videos linked below for more information about the program:

Tips for Supporting Learning and Monitoring Progress

  • Schedule time for learning.  When learners log in to PowerUp, they'll see a personalized weekly goal for each area of the program on their dashboard. Try to set a schedule that will help your reader reach this target each week.

  • Set up for success. PowerUp supports learning with audio directions, questions, and instruction. Try to provide a quiet space for learning. (Headphones can be helpful but aren’t necessary).

  • Log in and out correctly to ensure that usage minutes are accurate.
    • Remind your reader to complete a unit before logging off. The green progress bar at the bottom of the page fills up when the unit is complete.
    • Have your reader log out by going back to the dashboard and clicking on the X in the upper left. A confirmation message will be shown and logout is complete when the login screen displays.

  • Support learning.
    • It is important to let your reader work in PowerUp without help from parents, siblings or other caregivers. PowerUp was built to provide help and instruction to help students when they need it. Encourage your reader to keep trying--learning takes time!
    • Empower readers to set goals for their work in PowerUp.
    • Students can take charge and make decisions regarding their reading. They can select the skill area they wish to work on. You can help them monitor their usage and progress for each strand by clicking on the Your Progress tile.
    • Clicking on the Your Progress tile on the Student Dashboard gives learners access to an overview of their progress, including Streaks, time logged, and more.

  • Monitor progress and celebrate success!
    • Occasionally take time to look at the Student Dashboard with your learner. The Student Dashboard is shown at login, and just before log out. It is important that students are meeting their time goal while also completing units.
    • Talk to your learner about their progress in PowerUp by asking them about their favorite strands, passages or activities.
    • Celebrate success when your learner completes a level! Certificates are available to celebrate this accomplishment.

  • Extend the Learning
    • Visit Lexia’s At-Home Resources Hub for practice resources and more. Choose Lexia Skill Builders from levels your reader has recently completed to help strengthen and extend newly learned skills.
    • Have your child read to you, to a younger sibling or another family member. Many local libraries offer free online ebooks and other resources to enjoy together.
    • You can try these fun learning activities at home with items you already have: Lexia Read @ Home Activities.
