Snapshots to Success: Leading the Way to Success
Mariama Carson was hired to turn around Riverside Elementary School, a school in Indiana that had struggled for some time. An experienced leader, Carson knew what to do. She renamed the school Global Preparatory Academy at Riverside 44 and restructured priorities. She began with relationship building by guiding teachers in how to actively listen to students. She encouraged her teachers to validate the importance of the role of parents in a child’s education. Regarding instructional programs, Carson conducted a thorough review and chose Lexia Reading Core5® as their primary literacy intervention—with a commitment to fidelity of use in grades K–5.
In one year’s time, teachers and students have built strong relationships with each other, students are intrinsically motivated, parents are engaged, and Core5 is having an impact. “I’m excited by the improved student outcomes we are seeing,” commented Carson. “The percent of students passing IREAD3, the state reading exam for third-graders, increased from 58% to 66.6%. This is the highest score our school has received since the exam has been in existence.”
