Lexia Tech Note #100432

Lexia and Managed Users/Parental Controls

Lexia Programs

All Prior to Lexia Reading V5

Version

All

Platforms Affected Macintosh OS X 10.2+
Description

Attempting to limit users to specific applications through the use of the Limitations/Capabilities/Parental Control tabs in User Accounts results in a OS X error, "X does not work with the limitations you have selected."

Solution

Lexia uses Macromedia Director as a component in order to execute its code. Most Director applications share a common creator code, in this case PJ03 for Lexia. OS X's parental control settings use the creator code to identify programs and tell which a user can run and which are not permitted.

Approving one Director program using the PJ03 creator code will approve all applications that use the same code (i.e. other Lexia programs, other programs using the same version of Lexia). Approval of one Lexia program will thus approve the use of all Lexia programs, and attempts to add each program to the allowed list separately will generate the error message listed above.

We do not recommend using the OS X parental controls to implement security with Lexia, but if a school chooses to do so, be advised that it is not possible to permit some Lexia programs from being run but not others, due to the common creator code shared among them.
