Lexia Tech Note #201005: Extended Troubleshooting for Lexia Reading Installations on Mac OS X

Solution

The typical Lexia Reading client installation on Mac OS X consists of downloading the student client diks image, and then double-clicking on it to mount it as a drive. A Finder window will appear, containing the Lexia Reading package icon and an alias for the Applications folder. Dragging the Lexia Reading package icon to the Applications folder alias and releasing it will install the software in the Applications folder.

In some instances, this may not be enough to make the program accessible to all users. It may be necessary to manually set permissions on the package, or manually configure the program by modifying the login.ini file.

Manually Setting Permissions

1. Go to the Macintosh HD : Applications folder and select the Lexia Reading icon. Press Command-I to Get Info.

2. In the Info window, scroll down to the Sharing & Permissions section (on pre-10.5 systems, this may be labeled Ownership & Permissions). Click the triangle so that it points down and expands to show all of the permission options.

3. Make sure that all users have read and write permissions on the package. If the options are greyed out, you may need to click the padlock icon and provide an administrator password before making changes.

4. Click the red dot in the upper left to close the window.

Modifying the Login.ini File

1. Go to the Macintosh HD : Applications folder and select the Lexia Reading icon. Control-click on the icon and choose Show Package Contents.

2. In the new Finder window that appears, open the Contents folder, then open the LLSCommon folder. Double-click on the Login.ini file.

3. If the file does not automatically open and you are prompted to choose what program to use to open it, select TextEdit from the Applications folder.

4. Edit the Login.ini file as necessary (enter the customer code on the "ID=" line, set proxy information, change the server URL, etc. as advised by Customer Support).

5. From the File menu, save the file and then exit TextEdit.
