Lexia Tech Note #201008: Lexia Reading and Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6)

Solution

Rosetta

Lexia Reading is a PowerPC binary, which will run on both PowerPC and Intel-based Macintoshes. Machines with Intel processors will automatically translate the PowerPC Lexia code via software called Rosetta, which is included in OS X 10.4 and 10.5.

Rosetta is an optional component of OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). The first time a PowerPC program is run under Snow Leopard, a prompt will appear, asking if you wish to download and install Rosetta from Apple. Once Rosetta is installed, Lexia Reading (and any other PowerPC program) will launch Rosetta in the background as needed, with no further actions needed on the user’s part.

Permissions

There is no change to the required permissions to install and configure Lexia Reading on Snow Leopard. The user performing the installation and setting up the program configurations must have administrative rights on the machine.

Lexia Reading stores its settings, including the customer code and proxy configuration, within the Lexia Reading application package, under the LLSCommon folder in a file called login.ini. The first time the program is run, it will prompt for these settings, and save them to the login.ini file. Thus, the user doing the configuration must have permissions to modify the package.

After the program has been installed and configured, it may be run by any user, with or without administrative privileges.
