Lexia Tech Note #201013

Mac 10.6 Parental Controls – Applications

Solution:

On Mac OS X 10.6, the school or parent can limit the applications which the student is allowed to execute. In the Parental Controls screen (under System Preferences), the default tab shows “Only allow selected applications”. Selecting this checkbox means that the student will only be allowed to execute the applications you check in the list of applications below this option.

Once the Parental Controls for the student are set to only allow selected applications, when you install Lexia Reading, you will want to “Allow” the Lexia Reading application for your student. Here are the steps to allow Lexia Reading as an application:

  1. As Admin, install Lexia Reading following the installation instructions, and then execute Lexia Reading for the first time to configure the customer code and save the config settings.
  2. As the student, execute Lexia Reading for the first time. A popup will appear telling you that you do not have permission to execute the application. Click on “Always Allow” and enter the admin password when prompted.

DO NOT select or unselect Lexia in the Parental Controls list of applications to allow. If you do look at the list of applications in Parental Controls, you will see more than one Lexia with the icon listed. After you use the “Always Allow” button as the student, only one of these will be selected (Note: on Mac OS X 10.5, you will not see Lexia selected).

DO NOT select any other unselected “Lexia” in the list (there may be one or two). This will cause this error:

  • “Director Player Error: Unable to load movie playlist. Does the .INI file exist? It must contain a section ‘[Movies]’ with an entry ‘Movie01=Pathname.dir’.”

Once this error has occurred, the only solution is to uninstall Lexia Reading. Do this by dragging it from Applications into the Trash. Then go into Parental Controls and unselect Lexia as an allowed application (all of them). Then logout as Admin, log back in, and follow the instructions above to install and allow Lexia Reading.
