About Lexia

Middle/High School

Middle/High School:

Low performing middle school students using Lexia make significant gains in reading development.

According to the 2005 National Assessment of Educational Progress, 71% of 8th graders cannot read proficiently. These statistics further indicate that many middle and high school students would benefit from remediation reading instruction. Intervention at the elementary level simply does not reach all the children who need it.

Unfortunately, at the secondary level, very little emphasis is placed on phonics and word attack skills, which provide the building blocks for reading fluency and comprehension. Yet many middle and high school students lack these vital skills, and so their frustration increases as they are expected to build more and more upon their already shaky foundation. The key to succesful remediation is to target the areas of reading weaknesses and focus attention on these areas with repeated practice and reinforcement. By focusing reading instruction on specific gaps in skill mastery, students are more apt to catch up with their peers. Because Lexia Reading is an individualized program, older students can practice and master basic reading skills without embarrassment.

Lexia recognizes that improving reading comprehension is directly related to strengthening those foundational skills. That’s why Lexia offers a product specifically for older students, providing help for everyone from the middle school student to the high school senior at a high interest level with a more mature interface.
