Questions & Answers
Professional Quality Software for Use at Home
Since 1984, thousands of schools have implemented Lexia software for their students in special education, for learning English as a second language, and in some of the most successful mainstream classrooms. Now the same high quality educational software is available for use at home, at affordable prices.
How is the home version different from the school version?
From the student’s perspective, the activities are exactly the same. Where the school version tracks an unlimited number of students, the home version only tracks 3 students. Additionally, reports are limited to student-level reports (class-level summary reports are not available).
The home version of the Lexia Cross-Trainer differs from the school version in that one class comes assigned to the database and no other classes can be added or deleted. Up to three students can be added to the roster (any student added is automatically enrolled in the class).
Home versions do not include the Lexia Software Support Plan nor automatic updates or upgrades. This means that you may have to re-purchase your home product if you change your computer’s operating system version or buy a new computer with a different O/S version. Always check with Lexia before upgrading your computer, to see if your program will work under the new O/S. (This is true of most programs, not just Lexia's.)
Why do Lexia programs work?
Lexia Learning Systems software is designed by education professionals taking advantage of the latest research in reading skills acquisition theory, learning disabilities research, and research into designing effective educational software. Lexia software is not edutainment software. It is a serious learning tool for parents and students who are determined to improve their reading skills or cognitive skills. Students enjoy working in the software because it is fun, and they come back for more because they enjoy making progress. At Lexia, we respect students who want to learn, and we do our best to help them.
How is Lexia different from the hundreds of commercial programs available on CDs?
How often should my child use Lexia each week?
Our recommended minimums are:
- Lexia Early Reading & Lexia Primary ReadingLexia recommends 10 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week.
- Lexia Strategies for Older StudentsLexia recommends 20 to 30 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week.
- Lexia Cross-TrainerLexia recommends a minimum of 30 to 45 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week.
Of course anyone who wants to progress more quickly can spend more time than these recommended minimums!
My child seems to be stuck. How do I get her progressing again?
While using the reading products, the individual student report may indicate a lack of progress when the student has reached a skill that he or she has not yet been taught. With the cognitive products, progress is usually in leaps with plateaus in-between. Students can get frustrated at the plateaus, and those learners may benefit from a brief break from the program.

How do I order the Cross-Trainer suite of products, and how do they work together?
Cross-Trainer is now ordered as a single suite, which offers activities that strengthen both visual-spatial and logical reasoning abilities. However, you can order either of the Cross-Trainer products as an independent base program if you have previously purchased a partial Suite. For example, if you ordered Cross-Trainer: Visual-Spatial alone, you received a base program that contains visual-spatial skill-building activities, and a game controller. If you ordered Logical Reasoning as a base program, you received a program that contains logical reasoning skill-building activities, and a game controller. If you already have a game controller and one module of Cross-Trainer, and you wish to complete the Suite, you need to order the other module as an add-on: please call Lexia to order. Add-in programs do not ship with game controllers. Once you have both programsa base program plus add-in program, the combined suite works together, presenting both visual-spatial and logical reasoning exercises to the student.
What happens if I lose or break my CD?
Call (800) 435-3942 ext. 4 or ext. 233. Replacement CDs and manuals are available for purchase if you have the current version of the program. If you have an older version, you will need to re-purchase the program.
What happens if I buy a new computer with a different operating system version, or update my computer’s operating systems?
Please make sure you check the Hardware Requirements page for compatibility. Newer versions of the operating system may affect whether your software works. [This issue is not restricted to Lexia programs.] If you have an older version of Lexia that is not compatible with your new operating system, you will need to re-purchase a version of Lexia that is compatible (if available).
